Background:

St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School is situated in a rural community in the foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountains in the Kasese District of Western Uganda. The school was established in 1998 by the Catholic parish and is presently situated on one acre of land donated by the church.

When Classrooms for Africa became aware of the school in 2017, the enrollment was approximately 280 students in Nursery through Grade 7. The grades One through Seven held their classes in three partially constructed classrooms and a series of mud and stick buildings. The three Nursery classes met in the small church.

The students come from a community which is based on subsistence agriculture with a few adult males travelling away from home for work. In spite of the poverty and difficulties faced by the community, the level of commitment to the school and education of the children is high.

By November 2017 funds had been raised for the completion  of the three classrooms at the site and by December the project was well underway. By the time the new school year started in February 2018, the building was complete and the students using their new learning space. That same month, Classrooms for Africa provided funds for the construction of three more classrooms. Building on these started in March and by the end of May that project was also completed.

St. Joseph school now has ten permanent classrooms for their students.

Thank you, donors!
