Background:

Matere Model Nursery and Primary School is located in a remote foothills area of the Rwenzori Mountains, approximately 30 km from the town of Kasese. The school was started in 2012 by the Nyakabinogo Anglican Parish (Church of Uganda) to serve elementary-aged children. The church owns the land on which the school is situated.

The primary school is one of two schools which the church operates as part of its community program, the second is a high school. The church works to support the impoverished community which has suffered due to the lack of basic services, its remoteness, government neglect, rebel activities in the area and a number of environmental calamities. Apart from providing schooling, the church is committed to pastoral care and health services.

When Classrooms for Africa became involved with the primary school in 2017, classes were being held in a few temporary, incomplete structures, the church building and under the trees when the weather permitted. Western Canadian donors have provided funds to build a permanent school.
